Control and Fines

The authorities of the Police of the Czech Republic and the Customs Administration of the Czech Republic can check, using the vehicle’s registration plate number, whether the vehicle has a valid electronic Czech road vignette, when the tolls in Czechia were paid, or if the vehicle is exempt from road tolls in Czechia.

The check will be conducted directly on toll roads in Czechia using patrol vehicles equipped with a video surveillance system for license plate recognition, or via remote connection to control portals, as well as through inspections at roadside rest areas and parking lots. Payment for motorways in Czechia must be made before their use.

Amount of fines
  • A driver found by the system on a toll road in Czechia without a valid electronic road vignette (if the vehicle is not exempt from the toll) may face a fine of up to 20,000 CZK.
  • The check also applies to cases of illegal use of exemption rights. If an individual or legal entity submits a toll exemption application without being entitled to it, intentionally deceiving the system, the fine can be up to 100,000 CZK.If a toll road in Czechia is used by a vehicle eligible for exemption but the driver has not submitted the appropriate application, they face a fine of up to 5,000 CZK. The same fine applies to anyone who does not notify the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure within ten working days that the grounds for exemption no longer exist.
What happens to the collected data and photographs?

In addition to reading the vehicle’s registration plate and subsequently verifying the validity of the Czech road vignette, a photograph of the vehicle not exempt from the toll will also be taken if it does not have a valid paid electronic vignette in Czechia. Immediately after the photograph is taken, the software separates the photo from the data, and only the data are processed and sent to the verification system.

Within the Czech electronic vignette system, photographs are not used. They are kept only for the established period during which the Police of the CR or the Customs Administration of the CR may request them in the event of administrative proceedings. After the established period, the photographs are automatically deleted.
